Wednesday, May 11, noon-1:30 p.m; Duke Energy Convention Center
Zainab Salbi—Iraqi-American author, women’s rights activist, humanitarian, social entrepreneur and media commentator—will be the keynote speaker for the 37th Annual YWCA Career Women of Achievement Luncheon. An audience of more than 2,000 is expected to hear her talk.
At age 23, Salbi founded Women for Women International, a grassroots humanitarian and development organization dedicated to serving female survivors of wars and helping them rebuild their lives. Under her leadership as the organization’s CEO (1993-2011), the organization grew to help more than 400,000 women in eight countries. It has distributed more than $100 million in direct aid and micro-credit loans.
Salbi hosts TLC’s talk show “Nida’a” (“the calling”) for Arab women on the Dubai-based OSN network. The show, launched in October, is the first of its kind to air across the Middle East and Northern Africa. She is also the author of the bestseller “Between Two Worlds: Escape from Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam” (with Laurie Becklund); “The Other Side of War: Women’s Stories of Survival and Hope”; and “If You Knew Me, You Would Care.”
Salbi currently serves as editor-at-large at Women in the World Media, a news platform in collaboration with The New York Times hosted on The New York Times website.
The luncheon will honor eight women from Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky as Career Women of Achievement for their career success, leadership qualities and status as role models for women.
Co-chairs are two past Career Women of Achievement honorees, Dr. Monica Newby, president and owner of Newby Orthodontics, and Teresa J. Tanner, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, Fifth Third Bancorp.
Tickets are $75. Proceeds provide direct support to YWCA community programs. Info: 513-241-7090 or ywcacincinnati.org
