Movers & Makers co-publishers Elizabeth and Thom Mariner were privileged to join a small group yesterday for a guided tour of the in-progress headquarters building of FotoFocus, the Cincinnati nonprofit dedicated to lens-based art.
The new structure, commanding the northwest corner of Liberty and Sycamore streets, was designed by Cincinnati architect José Garcia, who in the 1990s crafted the building two blocks away on 14th Street currently housing FotoFocus offices and Lightborne Communications.
The building evokes the art and science of photography via numerous functional and design elements, and has an interior framed by the exposed composite wood beams which comprise the bones of the structure. The new headquarters is set to open late spring of 2025, according to Emily Akil, communications and outreach manager for FF.
After some introductory remarks by architect Garcia, the tour was led, in turn, by Katherine Ryckman Siegwarth, FF executive director, and project manager Noah Shroyer from Garcia’s team. Below are a few photos from the tour, mostly taken by Elizabeth Mariner.

The 2024 FotoFocus Biennial, themed “backstories,” opens with a weekend-long symposium, Sept. 26-28, accompanied by 108 exhibits in 87 galleries, stretching from Union, Kentucky to Gambier, Ohio.
