This year’s Cindependent Film Festival will feature 86 films – ranging from full-length features to music videos, documentaries and experimental films. There’s even an animated short about a mime going through a breakup at a diner.
The film festival is an initiative of CIFF, a local nonprofit working to bring professional resources to independent filmmakers in Cincinnati. One way to do that is by hosting the three-day film festival at Memorial Hall in Over-the-Rhine.
There was no shortage of interest for this year’s festival, which runs Sept. 19-21. The Cindependent Adjudication Team received hundreds of applications from independent directors and producers from 12 countries, including the United States.
Judges watched 220 hours of film to whittle the field down to just 84 shorts and two feature-length, which have a combined run time of 16 hours. Ultimately, they selected 22 entries created by Cincinnati filmmakers.
A key element of the selection process was to provide a diversity of voices. More than one third of the chosen movies were directed by persons of color. Women filmmakers account for more than 33% of the lineup as well.
In addition to the films, the festival will feature 25 live script-reading sessions. Other events on the schedule include masterclasses, deep dive conversations, a cinema expo and a variety of champagne-fueled red carpets and after-parties.
The full lineup and all event details are available on the Cindependent Film Festival website. VIP and general admission tickets are on sale now.
