Bethesda Foundation head to lead Good Samaritan Foundation as well

Andy Swallow, the president and CEO of the Bethesda Foundation, is assuming the same role with the Good Samaritan Foundation. Swallow plans to continue his position with Bethesda Foundation.

The move was made following what TriHealth described in a statement as “thoughtful discussions” with the trustees of both foundations over the past several months. In the end, both boards “unanimously and enthusiastically approved and endorsed” Swallow taking over the combined leadership role.

Swallow will replace current Good Samaritan head Mary Rafferty, who officially announced her retirement last month.

TriHealth stressed that its foundations are not merging. Good Samaritan Foundation staff will continue to report to its own board and the organization will continue to pursue its mission as it has since its founding in 1986. This includes securing philanthropic gifts for the Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science and the Good Samaritan Free Health Center.

The aligned leadership model allows for “greater coordination, improved sharing of resources and greater effectiveness,” TriHealth said. It also noted that the Bethesda Foundation staff have a long history of supporting various organizations and programs within TriHealth, including Hospice of Cincinnati and Fernside Center for Grieving Children, as well as its McCullough-Hyde Foundation.

When he assumes his new role on Jan. 1, Swallow will report directly to the boards of both foundations. The McCullough-Hyde Foundation will continue to be led by Tyler Wash, according to a release from TriHealth.

Mark C. Clement, TriHealth’s president and CEO, said leveraging Swallow’s expertise is a “logical and vital step in philanthropically supporting Good Samaritan Hospital’s continued evolution.”

Swallow has been at the helm of Bethesda Foundation – the philanthropic partner for Bethesda Hospitals, Hospice of Cincinnati and Fernside Center – since 2011. Under his leadership, the foundation has raised nearly $125 million, including critical funding for the continued additions and renovations of the Bethesda North Hospital campus.

“Andy’s proven leadership and fundraising skills have already made an enduring impact in advancing TriHealth’s bold vision,” Clement said.
