The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra has released the lineup for its 33rd season.
Each performance of KSO’s 2024-25 subscription series will take place at Greaves Concert Hall at Northern Kentucky University. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
The season opens Nov. 2 with “Sinister Sonorities,” a celebration of the Mexican festival, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
“Audience/musician face-painting, masks, candles and a large public ofrenda add to the atmospheric, ominous opuses the KSO will perform a frightfully fun evening of classics, premieres and Hispanic favorites and culture,” according to KSO.
The second half of the show opens with Alberto Ginestera’s “Toccata Concertata” from his first piano concerto featuring pianist May Phang.
The rest of the KSO schedule:
- Dec. 13-14: “Merry Christmas, Darling.” Vocalist Denise Parroco returns, as KSO arranger Terry LaBolt adds three Carpenters tunes from their 1978 Christmas recording for a 75-minute evening of secular, sacred, traditional, pop and classical music.
- Jan. 25: “Back in the U.S.S.R.” Sergei Prokoviev’s “War and Peace” overture opens the program, which features the monumental Symphony No. 7 by Dmitri Shoatakovich, entitled “Leningrad.”
- March 28 and March 30: “Carmen” in Concert (3 p.m.). Acclaimed singers Kirstin Chávez (Carmen), Richard Trey Smagur (Don José) and Morgan Smith (Escamillo) star in a semi-staged concert presentation of Bizet’s masterpiece, in French with projected English supertitles.
- May 10: “Swingin’ the Classics.” Stumbling upon intriguing jazz orchestrations of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Gershwin, Holst, Suppé and Verdi led KSO Music Director James Cassidy to assemble an All-Star Big Band to end the 33rd season with a bang.
Three decades of making symphonic music accessible
Founded in 1992, KSO’s goal is to make symphonic music and the concert experience “attractive, accessible and affordable” for Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati residents. One way it’s doing that is through affordable ticket prices.
This year, KSO continues to offer a variety of great programming at 2012 prices — $35 for single tickets or $150 for all five concerts. Tiered-pricing, flex-paks and live-streaming passes are available as well.
