King Records documentary to debut at OTR Film Festival

Emmy-winning production team Afrochine will debut its latest documentary, “King of Them All,” at the Over-the-Rhine Film Festival on Friday, March 7.

The documentary details how Syd Nathan built King Records into one of the first fully integrated music businesses, blending Appalachian, R&B and urban blues influences to help shape modern American music. The film highlights the label’s role in breaking racial and social barriers during a time of widespread segregation.

The premiere coincides with the 57th anniversary of Nathan’s passing.

The screening begins at 9 p.m. at The Woodward Theater on Main Street. Afterward, attendees can celebrate King Records’ influence with a dance party featuring DJ April Reign, who will spin classic tracks from the label’s catalog.

“King Records was more than just a record label – it was a creative crucible where diverse talents ignited a whole new sound,” said director Yemi Oyediran.

About the film

“King of Them All,” selected as part of the PBS Open Call for Emerging Artists, explores the legacy of King Records and its impact on funk, soul and rock ‘n’ roll.

Using rare archival footage, exclusive interviews, and AI-enhanced restoration techniques, the 75-minute documentary breathes new life into King Records’ history. It also contextualizes the label’s story within Cincinnati’s West End neighborhood, the Great Migration and the “Hillbilly Highway,” illustrating its lasting cultural impact.

“Our AI-driven restoration truly brings history to life, giving audiences a chance to witness the vibrancy of King’s musical evolution – and the power of inclusive diversity – like never before,” Oyediran said.
