Free video series helps nonprofit leaders navigate legal issues

Pro Bono Partnership of Ohio, the region’s only organization providing free business legal services to nonprofits, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the launch of a new educational video series designed to help nonprofit leaders navigate legal governance.

The six-part series, “I’m On a Nonprofit Board – Now What? The Legal Governance Lowdown for Nonprofit Board Members and Leaders,” aims to equip board members and executives with crucial legal knowledge amid an evolving regulatory landscape.

Topics include legal duties, compliance with state and federal laws and best practices for board operations.

Erin Cunniff Childs, PBPO’s president and CEO described the series as “especially timely given the rapidly changing legal landscape.”

“This one-of-a-kind series reflects our continued commitment to ensuring nonprofit leaders and board members have the knowledge and confidence to make strategic decisions that keep their organizations thriving,” she added.

Support when nonprofits need it most

Supported in part by a grant from the L&L Nippert Charitable Foundation, the on-demand series offers practical insights developed by PBPO’s team of expert attorneys. Each video, lasting seven to nine minutes, is available for free on the PBPO website.

“For the past decade, we have consistently prioritized innovation and excellence in the services we provide – and this series demonstrates those values,” said Susan Street Whaley, Procter & Gamble’s chief legal officer and PBPO board chair. “Our new video series demystifies complex legal governance topics, making the information understandable and actionable for those leading critical nonprofit work in our community.”

Since its founding in 2015, PBPO has provided more than $12.6 million in free legal services and education to over 400 nonprofit organizations in Cincinnati and Dayton. The organization connects nonprofits with volunteer attorneys from corporations and law firms, offering guidance on governance, fundraising, contracts, and employment law.

Carter Randolph, president of the L&L Nippert Charitable Foundation, emphasized the importance of legal education for nonprofits.

“Charities are organized with the best of intentions, but there are many legal and operational complexities that lie between a good idea and a great charity,” he said. “These PBPO videos help address those complexities so a charity can truly achieve greatness and enhance the quality of life in our community.”
