Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. will serve as the founding sponsor of LifeSciKY, a new nonprofit lab incubator scheduled to open next year in Covington.

Thermo Fisher is a global biotechnology company. Through this partnership, early-stage life sciences companies in Northern Kentucky will receive critical support, including access to lab infrastructure, technical support and potential collaboration opportunities with Thermo Fisher.

“As our founding sponsor, Thermo Fisher Scientific’s support will enhance our lab infrastructure and strengthen our ability to support early-stage life sciences companies,” said Christin Godale, executive director of LifeSciKY. “We want to thank Thermo Fisher Scientific for their commitment to increasing life sciences innovation in Northern Kentucky.”

Supporting innovation in NKY

LifeSciKY plans to open a 15,000-square-foot lab facility in the OneNKY Center by late summer 2025. The space will provide lab access, equipment, and other resources to biotech startups and academic spinouts, aiming to reduce the operational hurdles many early-stage companies face as they develop and bring their ideas to market.

The project has benefitted from $15 million in state funding.

“This announcement represents the type of partnership we knew was possible when we allocated $15 million to support a research lab in Covington,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “As Thermo Fisher Scientific continues to grow in our state, this partnership with LifeSciKY is yet another incredible addition to Kentucky’s growing life sciences sector.”

Kim Baltier, Thermo Fisher’s VP of global commercial operations for biosciences, said her company is looking forward to supporting LifeSciKY and the broader growth of Kentucky’s life sciences sector. Local leaders also voiced their support for the collaboration, describing it as a way to boost the region’s innovation economy.

“This partnership provides critical resources to support innovation, attract top talent and drive economic growth while building a collaborative ecosystem,” said Kenton County Judge-Executive Kris Knochelmann.

LifeSciKY is now accepting applications for lab residency.
