A historic movie house in College Hill is getting a new lease on life.
The College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation, or CHCURC, has kicked off the first phase of a $5.2 million plan to restore the Hollywood Theatre, a century-old building that has stood empty for years in the heart of the neighborhood’s business district.
Construction crews have started exterior renovations on the structure, replacing the roof, repairing brickwork, restoring windows and addressing the damaged marquee. The work aims to stabilize the building and preserve its historic character as CHCURC moves forward with plans for future use.
“The Hollywood Theatre isn’t just part of our past. It’s the heart of the future of our business district,” said Emmanuel Karikari, CEO of the nonprofit real estate development organization. “Restoring it will bring new energy to College Hill, creating a dynamic hub where culture, community, and commerce meet.”
A potential neighborhood anchor
CHCURC purchased the theatre in 2018. The building celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Redevelopment plans reflect community input, and CHCURC hopes to turn the site into a destination for residents, entrepreneurs and artists.
The organization partnered with 8K Development and the City of Cincinnati to lead the restoration. CHCURC sees the theatre as a future anchor for local businesses and a draw for visitors throughout the region.
The restoration adds to more than $91 million in recent investment across College Hill’s business district, including new housing, commercial projects and infrastructure improvements.
To complete the project, CHCURC will launch a $3.8 million capital campaign to raise remaining funds. The group encourages investors, potential tenants, and local partners to support the effort.
CHCURC has not yet announced a completion date.
