CAC leader picked for elite arts fellowship

Christina Vassallo, executive director of the Contemporary Arts Center, earned a spot in the DeVos Institute of Arts and Nonprofit Management Fellowship in Washington, D.C. — a highly competitive program that accepts just 3% of applicants worldwide.

She joins only six other arts executives in this year’s cohort, which includes leaders from the United States, Hungary, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia and England. Fellows came from a pool of candidates spanning 51 countries.

The three-year program offers fully subsidized executive training in strategic planning, leadership, fundraising and governance. Vassallo will begin her term with a monthlong residency in Annapolis, Maryland, joining a global network of cultural leaders focused on advancing the future of nonprofit arts institutions.

The fellowship adds to Vassallo’s growing national profile as a leader in contemporary art and nonprofit management. She joined the CAC in March 2023 following her tenure as executive director of the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, where she helped steer the organization through the pandemic, strengthened financials and curated ambitious programming.

Prior to that, Vassallo led Cleveland’s SPACES gallery and Flux Factory in New York. Her career has focused on championing experimental work, supporting artists and strengthening institutional sustainability.

Vassallo holds a bachelor’s degree in art history and a master’s in nonprofit visual arts management from New York University.
