Winton Lake reopens for water-based recreation after sewage leak

Great Parks reopened Winton Lake to canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing on Sunday after water quality tests confirmed E. coli levels dropped below state and federal safety thresholds.

The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) stopped a sewage discharge that had contaminated the lake, prompting the decision to reopen. Hamilton County Public Health confirmed the water now meets Ohio Bathing Water and U.S. EPA recreational standards.

“With E. coli results being below both the Ohio Bathing Water standards and U.S. EPA recreational standards, we lifted the recommendation to limit recreational activity at Winton Lake,” said Greg Kesterman, health commissioner for HCPH. “It’s safe to boat, fish and recreate at the lake, though we still recommend good hand hygiene after water recreation.”

After MSD identified the leak last week, HCPH recommended pausing some recreational activities. While the agency didn’t require a closure, Great Parks chose to suspend all water-based recreation at the lake out of an abundance of caution. The rest of Winton Woods stayed open.

Swimming remains permanently prohibited at Winton Lake under Great Parks bylaws.

All vehicles entering Winton Woods must display a valid Motor Vehicle Permit. Visitors can find details about purchasing permits, including free and discounted options, at greatparks.org.
