Canadian composer Simon Rivet will premiere a new chamber orchestra work with Cincinnati-based Summermusik in August 2026 after winning the second annual Kreitler Commission Competition.
Rivet topped a field of 296 applicants from 26 countries in a blind selection process based solely on two submitted compositions. Along with a $10,000 prize, he will compose a new work that will tour nationally during the 2026–2027 season. Partner orchestras in the competition include the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle in North Carolina and the Reno Chamber Orchestra.
“Simon is a fantastic young composer and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him,” said Evan Gidley, Summermusik’s executive director. “We are humbled by the quality of applications submitted for this competition, which further underlines Simon’s talent.”
A former classical guitarist, Rivet finds inspiration in nature and silence, shaped by three years of solitude living by a quiet lake. His work invites listeners into a “silent sanctuary,” exploring the internal forces of nature and humanity.
Rivet has earned top honors at the “La Gnove Musiche” and “SYN(es)THESIS” international composition competitions and received commissions from Ensemble Prisme. He also composes for dance, film and multimedia art.
“I’m truly honored by this recognition,” he said. “It’s a privilege to have the support of organizations so committed to living composers.”
The Kreitler Commission honors John Henry Kreitler, a 10-time Emmy Award-winning composer and former Summermusik board member who helped launch the competition before his death in January 2024. Summermusik premiered his “Second Symphony” in Cincinnati in August 2024.
Organizers plan to announce the third annual Kreitler Commission Competition in early 2026. The Kreitler family, community donors and participating orchestras support the program.
