Piano players in Cincinnati and across the country will hit the keys together on Saturday, June 21, as part of Roomful of Pianos, a free, multi-city event celebrating Make Music Day.
The event is part of a new national partnership between Cincinnati-based Music Teachers National Association and the Make Music Alliance, aimed at turning piano – typically a solo pursuit – into a shared musical experience.
MTNA, founded in 1876, is the oldest professional music teacher association in the United States. It supports music education through teaching, composition and scholarship and is helping organize performances in 14 cities.
“MTNA stands firm in the belief that exceptional music and music teaching belong to everyone, everywhere,” said MTNA CEO Brian Shepard. “We’re honored to partner with Make Music Day to bring the power and joy of making music to communities across the nation.”
A global celebration of piano
Make Music Day, held annually on June 21, is part of the international Fête de la Musique, celebrated in more than 2,000 cities worldwide. In the U.S., it’s coordinated by the nonprofit Make Music Alliance and supported by The NAMM Foundation.
In Cincinnati, Willis Music-Kenwood will host local players of all skill levels, pairing them up for duet performances throughout the day.
Other participating cities include Greenville, South Carolina, where teachers and students will perform in grouped showcases, and Honolulu, where piano instructors and teens will sight-read new music together. Another Ohio event will take place in Boston Heights at Steinway Piano Gallery Cleveland from 10 to 11 a.m.
Other confirmed Roomful of Pianos locations include Heid Music in Appleton, Wisconsin; Fox Music House in Charleston, South Carolina; West Music in Davenport, Iowa; PianoWorks in Duluth, Georgia; Gottschalk Piano in Fresno, California; Southern Nevada Music in Henderson, Nevada; Kasimoff-Blüthner Piano in Los Angeles, California; Artistic Piano in Medford, Oregon; Avery Piano in Providence, Rhode Island; and Menchey Music in Timonium, Maryland.
