CAC to debut 1st solo museum show for Marcus Leslie Singleton

A bold new voice in contemporary painting takes center stage this month as the Contemporary Arts Center unveils the world premiere of “Marcus Leslie Singleton: New Steps.”

Opening on Friday, the exhibition marks the first solo museum show for Catskill, New York-based figurative painter Marcus Leslie Singleton. It features a deeply personal mix of paintings, drawings and video. Curated by CAC curator Theresa Bembnister, the works explore Singleton’s experiences in Côte d’Ivoire, as well as intimate portraits of friends and family.

The opening celebration kicks off at 7 p.m. with gallery access, a DJ set by Nymph and a cash bar. An artist and curator talk also begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for nonmembers and free for CAC members. A 9 p.m. afterparty at Alice OTR will include no cover and line-skipping perks for CAC members.

Before the public debut, a special behind-the-scenes preview will take place Wednesday, June 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Attendees will join Singleton and Bembnister for an intimate walkthrough and discussion of the exhibition. Tickets are required and space is limited.

“Marcus Leslie Singleton: New Steps” received financial support from George and Linda Kurz. The CAC’s major operating support comes from ArtsWave, the Ohio Arts Council and other local donors.
