Cincinnati-based nonprofit MORTAR has expanded access to its entrepreneur training by launching a new self-guided digital curriculum.
The program, MORTAR Masters: Digital Edition, targets individuals who can’t attend traditional in-person sessions due to time, transportation or caregiving constraints. It delivers business fundamentals through video content, step-by-step instruction and downloadable tools.
Participants can complete the first five weeks of the 15-week course for free. Completing the rest of the program costs $150.
“This is about equity, plain and simple,” said Allen Woods, co-founder and CEO of MORTAR.

Since 2014, MORTAR has supported historically marginalized entrepreneurs and created pathways to business ownership and generational wealth. In addition to its entrepreneur academy, the nonprofit runs programs such as the Iron Chest Fund and The MORTAR Building, a hub for small business development.
Woods said he’s heard from potential program participants that they’ve wanted to join MORTAR programming but haven’t been able to because they haven’t been able to make the time commitment work because of jobs, parenting or transportation barriers.
The online version doesn’t include pitch competitions or access to MORTAR’s in-person alumni network. However, it offers the same foundational knowledge that aims to help small businesses start and grow.
“With this digital curriculum, we’re breaking down those barriers and opening up more opportunities for entrepreneurs to grow on their terms,” Woods added.
