A. James Jones, an experienced educator and theater professional, has been named artistic manager of Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts.
Jones, who most recently led the school’s drama department, officially stepped into the role Tuesday. As artistic manager, he will oversee SCPA’s renowned arts programs, support curriculum development, and help produce more than 250 student performances each year.
“James brings an extraordinary depth of experience to this position, both as a professional artist and as an educator,” said Michael Owens, principal of SCPA. “His leadership, vision and dedication to our students’ growth make him the ideal person to guide our artistic programs forward.”
The new leadership appointment comes at a time when SCPA continues to build on its national reputation. Part of Cincinnati Public Schools, the downtown campus is one of the country’s top public K–12 arts institutions. The school offers a pre-professional curriculum in music, dance, drama, visual arts and creative writing, integrated with rigorous academic instruction. Its graduates include nationally recognized artists, performers and scholars.
Jones brings both artistic and academic credentials to the role. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from Northern Kentucky University, a master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University and a Career and Technical Education certification. His career includes more than a decade of professional theater work across the country, as well as teaching and leadership in a wide range of creative disciplines, including acting, directing and design.
“It’s an honor to step into this new role,” Jones said. “SCPA is a special place where students are encouraged to explore, express and elevate their creativity. I look forward to supporting their artistic journey every step of the way.”
