Great Parks and Metro celebrated a major step toward regional trail connectivity with the opening of Phase 1 of the Glenwood Gardens to Winton Woods Trail.
Leaders from both organizations gathered July 2 at the new Metro stop at Springfield Pike and Glendale Milford Road to mark the occasion. Great Parks CEO Todd Palmeter and Metro CEO Darryl Haley arrived by bus to demonstrate the expanded access the project brings to the area. The event concluded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
The new segment links the Metro stop to the existing West Fork Mill Creek Greenway Trail and features a signalized crosswalk for safer pedestrian and bike travel. Although Glenwood Gardens and Winton Woods are located next to each other, no trail previously connected the parks without relying on local roads.
Trail designed for access and mobility
The 3.6-mile Glenwood Gardens to Winton Woods Trail will eventually stretch through Forest Park, Greenhills, Woodlawn and Springfield Township. Once complete, the route will offer not only recreational access but also a safe off-road path for residents traveling to schools, jobs, shopping centers and other destinations.
Construction on Phase 2, which will connect the greenway to Winton Woods, is set to begin later this year.
Great Parks received $352,000 in federal Transportation Alternatives funding and $123,000 in state Highway Safety Improvement Program funds for Phase 1. Phase 2 is supported by $6 million in federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement funds and a $500,000 Clean Ohio Trail Fund grant.
Trail connectivity ranks among the top priorities outlined in Great Parks’ Comprehensive Master Plan.
