Boston nonprofit Fathers’ UpLift opens office in Over-the-Rhine

A Boston-based nonprofit that provides mental health, substance abuse and workforce support for fathers has opened its first Ohio office in Over-the-Rhine.

Fathers’ UpLift focuses on helping fathers navigate barriers such as racism, trauma and addiction while encouraging collaboration with mothers and the broader community. Founded in 2011, the organization serves more than 400 clients each year in Boston and has helped over 16,000 fathers nationwide.

The Cincinnati office is Fathers’ UpLift’s second brick-and-mortar location. In its new 2,194-square-foot space at 1640 Race Street, the team will offer therapy, coaching, parenting education and family engagement programs for men working to overcome personal and systemic challenges.

“Our goal was to bring our services to a community where they could make a meaningful impact and OTR stood out for many reasons,” said Jermil Tarver, clinical manager at Fathers’ UpLift Cincinnati. He noted that a $600,000 multiyear investment from GreenLight Fund, a national nonprofit that supports programs addressing local needs, helped bring Fathers’ UpLift to Southwest Ohio.

“GreenLight Fund recognized the strength of our mission and believed Cincinnati was the right place for us to grow,” Tarver added. “Thanks to their support and the help of our realtor, Rachel Thompson of 3CRE, we’re proud to open our doors in OTR and begin serving fathers and families in the region.”

Fathers’ UpLift Cincinnati has four employees: Tarver, another clinician and two fellows. The organization will accept walk-ins as well as scheduled appointments, with office hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It also plans to offer a U.S. Therapist Recruitment Fellowship program to increase the number of BIPOC therapists in mental health, behavioral health and addiction fields. Qualifying graduate students receive a $15,000 stipend, funded licensure test prep, mentorship and professional development. Applications are open now

To introduce itself to the community, Fathers’ UpLift will host a public open house Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., featuring music and refreshments.
