Volunteers needed to build bikes for Cincinnati kids

Volunteers can put smiles on kids’ faces – and wheels under their feet during a special event in Over-the-Rhine this week.

Can’d Aid, a national nonprofit that helps underserved kids live active, creative lives, is teaming up with frozen Greek yogurt company Yasso to build 70 bikes for first and second graders at William H. Taft Elementary.

The bike build happens Thursday, Sept. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rhinegeist Brewery, with the bikes delivered to the school the next morning.

Can’d Aid is providing all the tools you’ll need. No prior bike-building experience? No problem – just come ready to jump in and help turn some wrenches. Sign up to help at candaid.org/event/ohio/help-build-bikes-for-cincinnati-youth

“For many of these kids, it’s their very first taste of freedom on two wheels,” Can’d Aid founder Diana Hicks said in a statement.

This volunteer event is part of Can’d Aid x Yasso’s third annual drive, which aims to deliver more than 1,200 bikes to kids nationwide in 2025. Through its Treads + Trails program, Can’d Aid aims to tackle what it considers worrying national trends: children average seven hours of screen time a day, only one in five gets enough exercise and rates of anxiety and depression are rising.

To do that, Can’d Aid gives kids healthy outlets and the chance to move, play and explore. Since 2013, the Colorado-based nonprofit has donated more than 12,800 bikes, 8,900 skateboards and thousands of instruments.
