tt stern-enzi, artistic director of the Over-the-Rhine International Film Festival, died Monday, just weeks after doctors diagnosed him with Stage IV sarcomatoid renal cancer.
stern-enzi, 56, had led the annual festival since 2021, following years as lead programmer and curator. He played a key role in the festival’s growth and in shaping its artistic vision, focusing on stories that foster human connection and celebrate shared humanity.
“Today we mourn the loss of a true creative force in Cincinnati,” said Susan Brownknight, CEO of LADD, which organizes the festival. “tt was a champion for vital artists and filmmakers from all walks of life whose unique voices were often ignored by the mainstream. His passion for movies was a passion for humanity itself, as he sought to connect us all through the power of sharing our stories. His was a story of insight, courage, and generosity.”
In addition to his work at the OTR Film Festival, etern-enzi was a longtime film critic and contributor to Cincinnati CityBeat and Fox 19, reviewing new films and streaming releases. He was also a member of the Critics Choice Association and covered major film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival.
Stern-Enzi’s influence extended into education and advocacy. He served on the advisory board for the Cincinnati Center for Film & Media Studies and was a member of the boards for both the Film Festival Alliance and Art House Convergence.
In its announcement, LADD remembered Stern-Enzi not only for his professional contributions but also for his personal presence. The nonprofit called him a loving husband, devoted father and son, and a friend to many, saying they’ll deeply miss his “presence, wisdom and warmth.”
Mayor Aftab Pureval took to his social media to mourn the loss of “a champion who lifted up the stories of those who are too often overlooked.”
“We mourn the passing of… a legend in our film community. From critic to curator to advocate (Stern Enzi) spent his time empowering us to think deeply and expand our compassion.”
