United Way seeks volunteers to help people file taxes for free

United Way of Greater Cincinnati seeks volunteers to help local residents file their taxes free of charge during the 2026 tax season.

Volunteers play a key role in United Way’s Free Tax Prep program, which helps thousands of people avoid filing fees and claim tax credits that boost their financial stability. More than 500 IRS-certified volunteers assisted with over 9,000 tax returns during the most recent filing season, saving filers about $2.5 million in preparation costs and helping them claim $10.3 million in refunds.

“Our volunteers help families take important steps toward financial stability,” said Moira Weir, president and CEO of UWGC. “They ensure families receive the refunds and credits they’ve earned – money that can cover essential expenses, reduce debt or build savings for the future.”

The Free Tax Prep program, a partnership between the IRS and United Way, operates as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) network. Services run from late January through April.

Volunteer roles include greeting clients, assisting with intake, preparing taxes and providing certified tax advice. United Way offers full training and ongoing support, and individuals can volunteer on their own or as part of a group that adopts a tax site.

To volunteer, individuals should be friendly, comfortable working with diverse clients, and willing to learn tax software and adhere to ethical standards.
