Recognize courage: Nominations open for 2026 Upstander Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Upstander Awards, a regional honor celebrating people who choose courage, compassion and action in the face of injustice.

Hosted by the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, the awards recognize local individuals whose everyday actions strengthen communities and inspire others. Since the program began in 2022, the center has highlighted those who stand up against hate, antisemitism and injustice in all its forms.

Examples of upstander actions include leading community service projects, advocating for equity, confronting bullying or speaking out when others remain silent.

Nominations are open to individuals at least 10 years old who live, work or study in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. Submissions must be in by March 31.

“We invite you to nominate an individual whose actions reflect the values of courage and compassion,” the organization said. “Upstanders remind us that one person’s choices can shape a more just and humane future.”

Celebrating those who go above, beyond for others

The Holocaust & Humanity Center, located in Cincinnati’s historic Union Terminal, uses survivor stories, artifacts, and interactive exhibits to connect history with present-day civic responsibility. Its Upstanders program highlights individuals who stand up for themselves and others, using their character strengths to pursue justice, both great and small.

The awards are part of a broader celebration, known as Upstander Month, featuring a community 5K, family activities, educational programs, and opportunities to connect with local nonprofits and volunteer initiatives. The centerpiece, however, is the awards gala at Union Terminal.

Past honorees include Dan Meyer, CEO of Nehemiah Manufacturing, recognized for second‑chance hiring and community investment; Kristin Shrimplin, CEO of Women Helping Women, for her advocacy and equity work; and Robert “Chip” Harrod, honored for leadership in interfaith unity and racial equity. Other recipients have included Whitney Austin, a gun violence prevention advocate, and Laura Brunner, a leader in affordable housing initiatives.

Each year, the awards draw more than 800 educators, civic leaders, and community members to the Union Terminal rotunda for an evening recognizing individuals for their moral courage and civic responsibility. Past ceremonies have featured nationally recognized voices, including actor Jesse Eisenberg and journalist Katie Couric, who helped amplify the importance of standing up for others.

The 2026 Upstander Awards will take place June 14.
