TriHealth CEO Clement to retire; current COO named successor

After more than a decade leading one of Greater Cincinnati’s largest health systems, TriHealth President and CEO Mark Clement plans to retire this summer, and the organization has already chosen his successor.

Clement will step down at the end of TriHealth’s fiscal year on June 30, the health system announced. The TriHealth board selected Chief Operating Officer Terri Hanlon-Bremer as his replacement.

Clement returned to Cincinnati in 2015 to lead the nonprofit health system, which operates five hospitals – Bethesda North, Bethesda Butler, Good Samaritan, McCullough-Hyde and TriHealth Clinton Regional – along with more than 140 additional care locations across the region.

“It has been the privilege of my career to return to my hometown in 2015 to lead a health system that has meant so much to me and my family,” Clement wrote in a statement.

He added that when he accepted the role, he envisioned a shorter tenure.

“When I joined TriHealth, I planned to work for (six to eight) more years as a CEO, with a firm commitment to do all I could to leave the organization better than when I joined it, and that time has come,” he continued.

Today, Clement said, “our patients are healthier, our care is safer, more accessible, and affordable, and our health system and providers are the most trusted and preferred in our region – and among the top ten most trusted health systems in the nation.”

A decade of transformation

Board Chair Mike Michael praised Clement’s leadership for helping reshape the system over the past decade.

TriHealth now provides a wide range of services beyond its hospitals, including physician practices, an ambulatory network, research operations, hospice care, employer-based health programs and fitness and wellness facilities.

“During Mark’s 11-year tenure as TriHealth CEO, he has guided the health system through a remarkable journey of transformation and growth focused on ‘Getting Healthcare Right’ – right care, delivered in the right place, at the right time to achieve the right and best outcomes for our patients at the right cost,” Michael said.

He added that the board sought continuity in selecting the next leader.

“So going forward, our work is to preserve and further enhance the strong organization we have built under Mark’s leadership, and Terri Hanlon-Bremer is the ideal, home-grown successor to help us do just that,” Michael said.

Longtime leader steps into top role

Hanlon-Bremer has spent nearly four decades in healthcare, beginning her career in 1987 as a cardiac nurse. She joined TriHealth’s leadership team in 2007 and has served as chief operating officer since 2022.

During her tenure as COO, the system strengthened operational performance in areas such as quality, service and financial management, while advancing initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and redesigning care delivery.

She also has helped lead TriHealth’s population health strategy and efforts to adapt services to changing patient expectations.

Hanlon-Bremer said the leadership transition will focus on continuing the work already underway.

“It is a great honor and privilege to be chosen to lead this amazing organization, working alongside our exceptional team members, leaders, and physicians, to continue to advance our mission and sacred work to improve the health of all those we serve,” she said.

Hanlon-Bremer credited Clement’s leadership with shaping the system’s direction.

“Thanks to Mark’s bold vision… we have built an organization, a culture, a team, and a path forward that can – and does – transform healthcare for the better,” she said.

“So, this transition is not about reinvention. It’s about staying the course, preserving what we’ve worked so hard to create, and continuing to invest in our people and our culture, and relentlessly improving everything else – all to ensure TriHealth is truly built to last for decades to come.”
