A longtime Cincinnati nonprofit is calling on volunteers to spend a few hours in May helping neighbors stay safe in their homes — with sign-ups closing later this week.
People Working Cooperatively is preparing for its 45th annual Repair Affair, a monthlong effort that connects volunteers with low-income homeowners across Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky for basic home repairs and accessibility upgrades.
Throughout May, volunteers will take on projects for residents who may not be able to complete the work themselves, including older adults, veterans, single parents, grandparents raising grandchildren and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes.
Matt Leininger, PWC’s volunteer program manager, described the event as a great opportunity for families, companies, schools and individuals to “get outdoors, enjoy the warm weather, and make a real difference in the community.”
Volunteer registration for the program closes Friday, April 24.
“Through Repair Affair, we’re able to support neighbors across the region with home repairs they may not be able to tackle on their own,” Leininger said. Whether you’re experienced with tools or just willing to lend a hand, we’ll match you with a job that suits your skills.”
The main event day is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, followed by a volunteer celebration with free food at the organization’s Bond Hill headquarters. Groups can also choose to participate on other days throughout the month.
Projects typically include installing handrails, ramps and grab bars, repairing walkways and steps, and completing landscaping or other maintenance work aimed at improving safety and mobility.
Organizers will supply materials and handle debris removal. Volunteers are asked to commit at least four hours and will be assigned projects based on their skills and preferences.More information and registration details are available at pwchomerepairs.org/repair-affair.
