Breakthrough Cincinnati recently celebrated its graduating high school seniors earlier while also marking a new milestone for the nonprofit: awarding its first student scholarship.
The nonprofit – which offers free, four-year college preparatory programming – held its second annual senior graduation celebration May 3 at Greater Cincinnati Foundation. It brought together students, families, supporters and staff to recognize members of this year’s class and their plans after high school.
During the event, the Breakthrough Cincinnati announced the first recipient of the new scholarship fund created with support from BT RISE, Barbara Turner’s organization dedicated to economic empowerment and education for women and underserved communities. The scholarship provides $1,000 annually for up to four years to help students attend a two-year college, four-year university or trade school.
The inaugural scholarship went to Lamari Lewis, who plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall. Lewis intends to study psychology and marketing before pursuing a doctorate in clinical psychology and eventually opening his own practice.
In a statement, Breakthrough Cincinnati’s leaders said the scholarship launch reflects a broader mission of helping students from underrepresented communities prepare for college and future careers. The organization noted that the goal is to expand the scholarship program in future.
