United Way volunteers help file more than 9K free tax returns

More than 500 volunteers with United Way of Greater Cincinnati helped local residents file nearly 9,300 tax returns this year, surpassing the organization’s total from the previous tax season.

Through the nonprofit’s Free Tax Prep initiative, volunteers helped taxpayers save an estimated $2.5 million in filing fees while securing more than $11.1 million in refunds by Tax Day in April. The program is part of the IRS-backed Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and provides free tax preparation services to eligible individuals and families across Greater Cincinnati.

For the third consecutive year, an AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team also supported the initiative. Nine AmeriCorps members helped file more than 1,500 returns and assisted taxpayers in claiming more than $1.5 million in refunds, according to United Way.

“This year’s results show what’s possible when our community comes together to support one another,” United Way President and CEO Moira Weir said in a statement. “We are grateful to the volunteers who gave their time and expertise to help their neighbors. The prep fees saved and refunds claimed help families cover essentials, reduce financial stress and strengthen our local economy.”

Free Tax Prep services run annually from late January through April. United Way said it is currently seeking volunteers for next year’s tax season. Information about volunteering is available by emailing freetax@uwgc.org or visit www.uwgc.org/taxvolunteer.
