After four years leading academics at DePaul Cristo Rey High School, Jim Schurrer is moving into the school’s top leadership role.
The school’s board of directors has named Schurrer as DePaul Cristo Rey’s next president, effective July 1. The appointment, approved by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, elevates a longtime educator whom school leaders credit with strengthening academic performance, increasing college readiness among graduates and improving faculty retention.
Schurrer has served as principal since 2022 and is already a familiar figure within the Catholic college-preparatory high school, which serves students with limited financial means through a combination of classroom instruction and a Corporate Work Study Program. The school is part of the Cristo Rey Network, a national system of 41 schools in 24 states.
Before joining DePaul Cristo Rey, Schurrer spent a decade as a teacher and administrator at St. Xavier High School. He also held teaching and leadership positions in Toledo and Springfield. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University and master’s degrees in education and arts from Bowling Green State University.
“DePaul Cristo Rey’s mission lives at the intersection of faith and action, and I am humbled to help lead this school into the future,” Schurrer said. “With our dedicated faculty and staff, we will strengthen our students’ experiences as we create transformational opportunities and build the kingdom of God in Cincinnati.”
Schurrer succeeds Siobhan Taylor, who led the school from 2020 through 2025 before leaving to become CEO of Cincinnati-based nonprofit Feed the Soul, which focuses on education and nutrition programs for young people.
One of his first responsibilities as president will be naming an interim principal for the upcoming school year and launching a search for a permanent replacement.
