Culture FIX: Jan. 4-10

Things always re-emerge slowly coming out of the New Year’s gate. If you’ve been holed up and are needing cultural sustenance, here are a few dandy suggestions. Happy New Year!

Culture FIX: Nov. 16-22

Some want turkey with all the fixins. Me? I’m just looking to get my culture fix. As we fast approach Thanksgiving, there is so much to be thankful for Cincinnati, not the least of which is a vibrant cultural scene. Happy to be filling in again for my friend Thom Mariner to tell you about events both great and small.

Stoking the flame of Cincinnati’s ‘Black renaissance’

While Cincinnati’s muscular arts infrastructure rivals bigger cities with bigger budgets, the city has struggled to cultivate, retain and elevate Black and Brown performers. Movers & Makers wanted to address the disparity. Meet David Choate, dancer; Gee Horton, visual artist; and Kick Lee, musician and music entrepreneur.

Culture FIX: June 22-28

The coming week is chock-full of visual art, song and even some art songs, plus a parade and festival overflowing with Pride. A week-long feast for all your senses.

I try to be eclectic in these selections, to make sure I’m covering many tastes and interests, but I think this week I might have outdone myself. Or maybe Cincinnati is simply outdoing itself? You get to decide.

And the seasons begin to close… It does not seem possible that we are nearing the end of the main 2021-22 performance season, but here we are. Get ’em while they’re hot. Just a few weeks left before the switch-over to summer. Still plenty of great things to choose from, I promise!

This is a bunched-up week with big bunches of events: a five-day festival, four days of dance and movies and the CSO, three theater openings, two movie double bills and a two-day symposium, plus one of J.S. Bach’s grandest compositions, capped off by the bigger than life Fran Lebowitz. Good luck keeping up…
