If you’re a fan of theater, this is your week: In all, more than a dozen new productions – college, community and professional – open during the next few days. We’re taking a look at several of the top picks, plus other arts and culture events in this busy week.
Cincinnati’s fabulous biennial light and art festival is behind us – but that doesn’t mean a bleak, post-BLINK wasteland is ahead of us. Here are some highlights from the coming week’s busy cultural calendar.
Eclectic is the word of the week. Insects, Broadway flops (or not), German codes, incomplete symphonies, anti-feminism and a singing group called Whiffenpoofs? This “no theme” week of diverse events demonstrates the wide variety available any given week. How many cities our size can match that? Enjoy talented, teenage musicians playing their winning concertos with the Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony or some ghostly jazz at The Memo. Or, check out a movie at The Woodward and grab a pre-film sandwich across the street MOTR. Never a dull moment in the Queen City.
The leaves are raked, the lights are up, the turkeys have been picked clean (and so, some say, have the Bengals) … And now, ’tis the season! Make way for a feast of holiday fare: “The Nutcracker,” “Messiah,” “Feast of Carols,” “White Christmas,” “Advent Lessons” and other favorites highlight the week.
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra (KSO) kicks off its 32nd season this October. There are five shows, and seven performances overall.
This week encompasses the full spectrum, from cultural events about our history to contemporary dance, from al fresco art and music to a trio of film events (one celebrating the outdoors), two powerful examples of Iranian artists standing up to fundamentalist oppression, an exploration of what financially divides us, new and traditional theater, art from around the nation, plus with a variety of music that illustrates our shared humanity. There’s a lot to take in.
Art and culture, two blessings of our community, give us an extra helping this time of year. Best just loosen your belt and dig in.
The unkindest cut comes Sunday, the saddest day of the year – aka, the day daylight saving time ends. Add to the brew in the cauldron the goblins of All Hallows Eve on Thursday, and it adds up to a frightful week indeed. We’ve got just the antidote, though: a bubbling mix of carefully selected arts and culture events.
