The days are growing shorter, and the hummingbirds are heading south, so fall is on the way despite the persistent 90s. Our cultural organizations have already got their seasons in full gear. If you’re new to Cincinnati, then you know: The first question you were asked was “Where did you go to high school?” The second : “Where are you from?” If you ask Charla Weiss, you’re in for a treat. Her answer illuminates a personality informed by a kaleidoscope of landscapes and cultures and a passionate appreciation for the arts.
The lineup, announced this week, blends contemporary choreography with classic story ballets and family programming. It also includes the return of The Kaplan New Works Series and the regional premiere of “Hansel and Gretel.”
Named for longtime CSO bassoonist Bill Winstead, the series is curated by musicians and features chamber performances in the Music Hall Ballroom.
Tonight from the stage of Music Hall, Evans Mirageas, Cincinnati Opera artistic director, unveiled details of the company’s 2027 Summer Festival. Performances will run from June 18 through August 1, 2027, featuring stories intended to explore courage and conviction, romantic wit, fierce passion, jubilant celebration and intimate discovery.”
The funding will support 46 arts organizations across Greater Cincinnati, helping pay for performances, exhibitions, arts education and other community programming.
Now that the summer solstice has come and gone, we’ll be heavy on outdoor events for the next couple of months – this week with concerts and celebrations in the parks, woods and neighborhood centers, an art gallery “crawl,” movies under the stars and, of course, the ever-popular Panegyri Greek Festival.
You might not believe it with our chilly nights lately, but summer officially arrives Sunday. Around these parts, that means more than grilling and baseball: It means cultural celebrations (i.e., food), jazz galore and opera. Wrap your seven veils and pick a night on the town from our handy list.
There are people that actually enjoy hot weather and don’t mind humidity. For them, we have outdoor celebrations this week, if the rain holds off. For the rest of us, there’s plenty to do in air-conditioned comfort, where the only thing hot will be the music. Whichever you prefer, enjoy.
