Did you BLINK? Have your feet recovered? Ready for more? No, not another multimile trek through the heart of Cincinnati and Covington. Just the usual bountiful array of weekly cultural and seasonal happenings. (Apologies for the Saturday pileup. I did not do the scheduling.)
The days are growing shorter, and the hummingbirds are heading south, so fall is on the way despite the persistent 90s. Our cultural organizations have already got their seasons in full gear. Up this week: a festival of films, new ballet works, a Tuesday chamber music showdown … and the chicken dance. Prost!
Culture and the arts not only provide enjoyment and relaxation, but sometimes require us to consider the ways of the world. So it is this week. The Appalachian experience, LGBTQ issues, diversity and grief create art that makes us think. Seafood, Fleetwood Mac, a majestic owl and good shopping are still on tap, but have a closer look.
If you’re not acclimated to the heat yet, the weather gurus say weekend rain may temper things. Well, OK … if it actually happens. If not, there’s at least as much to do inside as outside this week. So no excuses for not enjoying some mid-July culture.
You might not believe it with our chilly nights lately, but summer officially arrives Sunday. Around these parts, that means more than grilling and baseball: It means cultural celebrations (i.e., food), jazz galore and opera. Wrap your seven veils and pick a night on the town from our handy list.

May Festival steps onto the risers (don’t forget dinner in WP, first) while Simon and Garfunkel take the stage in Kentucky. We have a strangely eclectic mix of arts and culture events this week, so let’s just get In the Mood to Take the “A” Train to Fleet Street, tangle with Tango on the Square, tour the cosmos with an ancient prince, skip to the Scottish Highlands and California redwood forests, and much more …
Can we believe it this time? Is it really, finally fall? Besides crisp nights and the smell of bonfires, the most sentimental season offers plenty of opportunities to indulge ourselves in a cornucopia of culture, from our river history to new creators for the concert hall and cinema. Like a pile of leaves, let’s dive in.
Get your fill of outdoor activities before the season finally cools down. Movies in the park, blues on the Square and Oktoberfest on the riverfront await. Intriguing lectures, great theater and a film festival also have plenty of empty seats that need you in them. Enjoy.
Jazz, poetry, food, tributes, films, orchestras and an author talk. Even in the dead of summer there is still plenty to fill up a week.
