Summer is culturally here, even if the solstice is still a few weeks away. In some cities, that might mean less culture. Not here. We just move it outside. There’s also a visual cornucopia of art openings indoors this week to delight the eye. Read on and plan your busy week ahead.
A bevy of terrifying choices might suggest Halloween is approaching . From “Rocky Horror Show” and vampires to “Friday the 13th” and dancing clowns, the Queen City is celebrating from top to bottom. You don’t celebrate all things macabre? How about some coffee or Shostakovich? There’s the full complement of lectures, jazz and theater. Something to suit each of you.
Important social issues take center stage at the Mercantile Library and concert nova presents an intersection of music and photography in Northside. Cincinnati World Cinema helps us to understand atrocities in the West Bank, while Opera Raps shows us there is much more to “Fiddler on the Roof” than a sunrise and a sunset. Take it all in.
What a week. From Carole King to ceramics to fairy tales, take your pick from an eclectic collection of culture offerings. High points include a CCM master class offered by CSO violinist Augustin Hadelich or a fantastical, horrific look at the potential of technology. Or check out the first City Flea of the year, Spring Vintage Market, in Norwood.
If too much shopping and singing and decorating have you in a squeeze, take a night off and relax with something outside of your holiday norm. Do you like jazz? How about lights? There’s a lot of both this week. Not a bad thing. And Shakespeare is plentiful, if that’s your gig. The CSO performs an interesting operatic version of “Hamlet”, fully staged and designed by Paris’ famed Opéra Comique while Xavier stages “Twelfth Night.” Enjoy.
This week encompasses the full spectrum, from cultural events about our history to contemporary dance, from al fresco art and music to a trio of film events (one celebrating the outdoors), two powerful examples of Iranian artists standing up to fundamentalist oppression, an exploration of what financially divides us, new and traditional theater, art from around the nation, plus with a variety of music that illustrates our shared humanity. There’s a lot to take in.
Dance, dance and more dance… Grateful for a rare bounty of movement this week, but there’s plenty to choose from across the arts spectrum. Just watch out for an occasional zombie here or there. Happy Halloween!
The seasons they are a-changin’ this week, with some ending and some ramping up. There are fun fundraisers you might enjoy, plus outdoor art, cocktails- and flowers-as-art, and even movies-while-afloat. Just try to keep up…
And the seasons begin to close… It does not seem possible that we are nearing the end of the main 2021-22 performance season, but here we are. Get ’em while they’re hot. Just a few weeks left before the switch-over to summer. Still plenty of great things to choose from, I promise!
