Culture FIX: Aug. 19-25

It’s not something one expects to say in mid-August, but we hope your homes are dry and the trees near you are still standing. Assuming you’re safe and sound, there’s plenty to get out and enjoy: hot jazz, sinfully good orchestral fare and “new” Gershwin, to name a few.

Culture FIX: May 13-19

This week it’s about singing, shopping and books. All of my favorite things. May Festival steps onto the risers (don’t forget dinner in WP, first) while Simon and Garfunkel take the stage in Kentucky. Langston Hughes, Harriet Beecher Stowe and some acoustic blues each have their moment. Take your pick.

Culture FIX: April 8-14

A lecture on poetry or sea otters? A Greek tragedy or Rachmaninoff? Dance and theater companies wrap up their seasons and the legendary Quatuor Ébène finally comes to Cincinnati. Add a hint of Brazilian jazz and you’ve got a tasty recipe for a cultural feast.

Culture FIX: March 18-24

Stepping in this week to pick up the slack for your regular FIXers who each seem to be occupied elsewhere. Truth be told, they all provided a note, so I could not say “No.” There is a lot of homegrown talent among this week’s selections. Pretty impressive. Pay attention as we lay out your weekly smorgasbord…

Culture FIX: Feb. 18-24

What a difference a week makes. The snow is a melted memory, and overeager daffodils are more than an inch tall in the front bed. If you were perfectly willing to wait winter out, you’ve succeeded. Time to get out and see what Cincinnati has to offer. Turns out it’s a lot. Read on.

Culture FIX: Feb. 11-17

It’s time to roll off the couch and stop moaning about dirty snow. There’s plenty to entice, including some interesting plays, Cajun and Latin jazz or J.S. Bach. Black History Month continues while Swan Lake takes the stage. Don’t miss the extraordinary James McMillan’s “Seven Last Words from the Cross.” Enjoy some culture and new-found warmth.

Culture FIX: Sept. 17-23

Get your fill of outdoor activities before the season finally cools down. Movies in the park, blues on the Square and Oktoberfest on the riverfront await. Intriguing lectures, great theater and a film festival also have plenty of empty seats that need you in them. Enjoy.

Culture FIX: June 18-24

Visual art takes the stage this week with openings at Eisele and Weston galleries, while Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park introduces us to soundscapes. Good film is abundant at Cincinnati World Cinema and Washington Park, which gets a little “Wicked.” Open your eyes and take it all in.

Culture FIX: May 14-20

Don’t blame me. Around Casa di Consoli, we call the celestial alignment when it seems every organization in town decides to offer major events at the same time as an Every Weekend. We have one of ’em on tap this week – especially on Saturday (good grief!). Just remember: I was not in charge of scheduling.
