Culture FIX: March 27-April 2

We’re springing ahead with an eventful week highlighted by once-a-year celebrations – Easter Sunday, the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day and the Cincinnati Zoo’s festival of flowers. But there are other options for those of us seeking a cultural fix, including several tasty musical treats.

Culture FIX: March 20-26

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the culture is. Well, it’s all around us this week – and with the start of the season, we celebrate everything from a noble gas to music for European aristocrats to the Sport of Kings.

Culture FIX: March 13-19

Eclectic is the word of the week. Insects, Broadway flops (or not), German codes, incomplete symphonies, anti-feminism and a singing group called Whiffenpoofs? This “no theme” week of diverse events demonstrates the wide variety available any given week. How many cities our size can match that? Enjoy talented, teenage musicians playing their winning concertos with the Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony or some ghostly jazz at The Memo. Or, check out a movie at The Woodward and grab a pre-film sandwich across the street MOTR. Never a dull moment in the Queen City.

Culture FIX: Feb. 28-March 5

Quick quiz: Which of these things does not belong with the others? Jazz harp. A sharp-eared fox. An extra day. Thirsty goats. A Sausage Queen. A pot of stew. A pile of food cans. And plenty of beer … Answer: They all belong, of course, in this week’s Culture FIX of varied, intriguing and sometimes unpredictable events.

Culture FIX: Feb. 14-20

Check out interesting things to do in some of the area’s historic places of worship. Not all is sacred, though. Theater, children’s programs, chamber music, an organ concert and some Bach will grace chancels across the city. Plus, a whole lot more…

Culture FIX: Feb. 7-13

Weekends are certainly the time to get out and enjoy a concert or an art exhibit, but have you ever tried relaxing in front of an artsy movie or some jazz after a long day at work? Take advantage of an empty restaurant or easy downtown parking on a Monday night and plan an evening at The Woodward. How about some Camp Washington Chili and the American Sign Museum on Thursday?

Culture FIX: Jan. 31-Feb. 6

We’re at that awkward stage in Culture FIX this week: Some events still mark our bleak midwinter, while hints of Mardi Gras and (dare we say it?) spring start elbowing their way in. Throw in the revival of a dreaded vampire and an invasion of toothy furry creatures and some atrocious puns …

Culture FIX: Jan. 24-30

If this week’s culture agenda doesn’t get you off the couch, nothing will. Visual art takes a commanding lead with a bevy of exhibit openings. If music is your gig, the CSO plays a crowd-pleasing program of Mozart favorites (no, there won’t be “too many notes”), while Christ Church Cathedral music tunes up, again, after their busy holiday season. Enjoy!

Culture FIX: Jan. 17-23

Is it cold enough for you yet? Now that actual winter weather has arrived, many of us may feel that instinct to just hibernate and watch football. And yet, good reasons do exist to get out and participate in Cincinnati culture this week. The calendar may be thinner than usual, but there’s still a good selection of events to warm that winter chill.

Culture FIX: Jan. 10-16

In the bleak midwinter the Cincinnati arts scene is far from bleak. Resist the urge to settle in under a cozy blanket with a good book. Venture out and continue to support artists and performers who contribute to our culture year ‘round.
