Did you BLINK? Have your feet recovered? Ready for more? No, not another multimile trek through the heart of Cincinnati and Covington. Just the usual bountiful array of weekly cultural and seasonal happenings. (Apologies for the Saturday pileup. I did not do the scheduling.)
The funding will support 46 arts organizations across Greater Cincinnati, helping pay for performances, exhibitions, arts education and other community programming.
This week it’s about singing, shopping and books. All of my favorite things. May Festival steps onto the risers (don’t forget dinner in WP, first) while Simon and Garfunkel take the stage in Kentucky. Langston Hughes, Harriet Beecher Stowe and some acoustic blues each have their moment. Take your pick.
This year’s awards will support projects across Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana, ranging from youth orchestras and vocal scholarships to free community concerts and music outreach initiatives.
As the Ol’ Lefthander might say, we’re rounding third and heading for home, as far as summer is concerned. Way too many kids are already back in school, and Labor Day weekend may be a bit more than a head-first slide away, but there’s plenty of summer fun ahead this week.
The 45 grant recipients represent a range of large, mid-size and small nonprofit organizations across the region. Grant sizes vary widely, typically ranging from $10,000 to over $1 million.
Some “once-a-year” festivals continue this week – early music and Jewish/Israeli films – but there’s plenty more afoot. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra celebrates incoming Music Director Cristian Măcelaru, Cincinnati-born playwright Theresa Rebeck comes home to direct a play, and several events focus on themes of love to get us in the mood for Valentine’s Day.
If you’re one of those All Hallows Eve or Day of the Dead or Halloween people, this week’s for you. Enjoy a good ghost story, scary ballet or a Stephen King film. Maybe a requiem is your thing. Of course, there’s jazz, some “true crime” theater and the last of FotoFocus. Boo!

The arts are alive and well even in the dead of summer. Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra opens its monthlong Summermusik festival, while the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra gets movin’ across the river. Queen City Opera’s game-changing take on Mozart’s “Magic Flute” jumps on at the Aronoff. Plenty of outdoor music and some good theater pieces round out the week.
