After a hot holiday weekend, take time to enjoy the indoors. A Patsy Cline fan? Maybe you’re in the Walter Cronkite club. Cincinnati Opera goes all out for their world premiere. Founding Father John Adams said that future generations should celebrate American independence “with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” Well, we’ve certainly followed his advice!
Now that the summer solstice has come and gone, we’ll be heavy on outdoor events for the next couple of months – this week with concerts and celebrations in the parks, woods and neighborhood centers, an art gallery “crawl,” movies under the stars and, of course, the ever-popular Panegyri Greek Festival.
Memorial Day is past, the cool, rainy weather is pretty much over (for now), and it’s time to focus on summer arts and culture with a week filled with outdoor events.
As the Ol’ Lefthander might say, we’re rounding third and heading for home, as far as summer is concerned. Way too many kids are already back in school, and Labor Day weekend may be a bit more than a head-first slide away, but there’s plenty of summer fun ahead this week.
You can tell the sun is rising farther to the south these days, but that doesn’t mean our summer days – and all the events we pack into them – are over. Not by a long shot. Indoors and out, there’s the usual overflowing list of enlightening entertainment waiting just for you. Need help picking? Well, that’s why we get the big bucks.
With apologies to composer Béla Bartók, we’re calling this week’s Culture FIX our “Out of Doors” Suite. Every event listed here takes place outside – well, except for Cincinnati Opera, but remember, the company performed “out of doors” at the Cincinnati Zoo for over 50 years.
Visual art takes the stage this week with openings at Eisele and Weston galleries, while Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park introduces us to soundscapes. Good film is abundant at Cincinnati World Cinema and Washington Park, which gets a little “Wicked.” Open your eyes and take it all in.
