School has already started, and the nights are chilly, but don’t be deceived by the pumpkin-flavored menus. It’s not fall yet. There’s plenty to do during these last breaths of summer: a live Bard broadcast, creepy movies, orchestral Zappa and a jazz world premiere for starters. See what you can fit in. It’s all good.
Culture and the arts not only provide enjoyment and relaxation, but sometimes require us to consider the ways of the world. So it is this week. The Appalachian experience, LGBTQ issues, diversity and grief create art that makes us think. Seafood, Fleetwood Mac, a majestic owl and good shopping are still on tap, but have a closer look.
Summermusik honors America, veterans and pets, while some Irish guys blow into town. Stephen Sondheim and Lillian Hellmann take the stage. Mercantile offers up history on our 19th amendment. Like watercolors? Head to Mariemont or check out some jazz in Wash Park. Culture is never lacking even in the dead of summer in Cincinnati. Just don’t forget your umbrella.
Music, murder, mayhem and movies top the list of fun things to do this week. Agatha Christie and Michael Crichton have their moment, while Carmen (spoiler alert!) meets her maker at the hands of her jilted lover. Chamber music and art inspired by playing cards round out an exciting week of cool stuff to do.
Many of our favorite groups conclude their seasons in the next few days. From Grateful Dead to Beethoven, there is plenty of music on tap. Our rich jazz scene holds its own and you can experience a “walking concert.” There’s not quite 525,600 minutes of culture, this week, but surely spring is the season of love.
I have good news and some bad news. The good: Arts and culture offerings in late spring bloom like honeysuckle in these parts. The bad: You’ll have to clone yourself to get to it all. If you can’t do that, you’ll just have to plan wisely. Don’t fret too much, though. There are no wrong answers.

The weather is warming and the sun is shining, so make a plan and live it up before a relaxing Easter Sunday with family and friends.
Festival season is upon us and it opens with a bang. Bockfest and its monk-led goat kick-off at Arnold’s and Cincinnati Wine Festival uncorks in the newly renovated First Financial Center. Brahms and Schumann dominate and you can catch some Bach in Hyde Park. Shakespeare, new playwrights, art and jazz complete the week. Enjoy.
I know what you’re thinking: It won’t even break freezing for five of the next seven days. Why would I want to go out there? You do, though, because there’s a bomb cyclone’s worth of events to warm your spirit. Read on and feel the chill melt away.
