Taking Root’s inaugural Make a Difference Day effort, in which volunteers planted 1,1000 trees in 22 communities, is one of 10 projects nationwide to receive a $10,000 grant from the Make a Difference Day Foundation.
Taking Root hopes to make its second community tree-planting event even bigger. Those interested are invited to attend a free class offered at the Civic Garden Center on Aug. 15.
Adding trees to communities has been shown to increase property values, decrease crime and make residents feel younger and wealthier.
Greater Cincinnati area is currently faced with loss of its tree canopy due to invasive pests and plants and overpopulation of deer. Taking Root hopes to reforest the area by replacing lost trees with a diverse selection of native and non-invasive ornamentals.
