An annual service-learning initiative funded by the KEEP GOING 25 Foundation empowered young people across four states to bring hope and light to 400 people in need of love and support this holiday season.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, youth teams, families and community groups came together to place luminary displays at the homes of individuals and families as part of the Illumi-NITE initiative. With support from donors, the program provided free luminary kits to participants, ensuring accessibility and encouraging widespread involvement.
“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the youth and their communities,” said Callie Currin-Carroll, executive director of the Cincinnati-based nonprofit. “Illumi-NITE is a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of hope and connection.”
Bringing light, hope to those in need
Founded in memory of Michael Currin, the KEEP GOING 25 Foundation aims to inspire young people to embrace leadership, kindness and service through action-oriented community projects. It does so by funding and supporting service-learning programs for youth aged 10–25, and equipping them important life skills, including compassion.
The Currin family created Illumi-NITE in 2022, two years after the death of Michael Currin.
The family said the holiday season can be very overwhelming for grieving people. One night, not long after Michael’s passing, the Currin family came out to see their house and entire neighborhood lined with the beautiful lights of luminaries.
“It was this simple act of kindness that gave them hope to KEEP GOING,” the foundation’s website reads.
Over the years, the event has grown from 80 students brightening the lives of 25 recipients during the first year to hundreds of young people working together this year. Youth-led teams represented schools, sports teams, clubs and nonprofit organizations.
