Great Parks wants feedback on West Region Blueway & Trail System

Great Parks is inviting the public to weigh in on plans for the first river access point in its upcoming West Region Blueway & Trail System. The project aims to expand outdoor recreation opportunities along the Great Miami and Whitewater rivers in western Hamilton County.

An open house will take place on Tuesday, March 18, from 5-7 p.m. at the Miami Whitewater Forest Visitor Center auditorium. Attendees will have the opportunity to review design plans for the initial site, located at Mitchell Memorial Forest along the Great Miami River.

The proposed access point at 5451 E. Miami River Rd. will feature a canoe and kayak launch, fishing area, parking, a new restroom and a natural surface trail. Positioned near the midpoint of the river within Hamilton County, Great Parks believes it’ll serve as a key stop for paddlers, providing an entry and exit point for trips along the waterway.

Construction on that phase of the project will begin in 2026.

The West Region Blueway & Trail System will ultimately create a 36-mile network of trails and water access points connecting multiple Great Parks properties, including Miami Whitewater Forest, Mitchell Memorial Forest, and Shawnee Lookout.

This initiative aligns with the Great Parks Comprehensive Master Plan, which prioritizes the development of a blueway system. Funding for the project will come in part from the 0.95-mill levy approved by Hamilton County voters in 2021 to support infrastructure improvements and long-term park initiatives.

Great Parks stressed that it has prioritized public input as part of shaping the West Region Blueway & Trail System Master Plan, set for completion this spring. The final report will reflect two years of planning, outlining a strategy that balances conservation efforts with recreation and education opportunities.
